Community of Opportunity
Incorporated in 1928, the Village of Gurnee has grown from a small farming community to one of the Midwest’s largest Destination Shopping and Entertainment hubs. Centrally located halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee on Interstate 94, Gurnee is a place where small town charm meets big city amenities all in one place.
The Gurnee of today is a 13.5 square mile area, with a population of 31, 170. It is a balanced community, with approximately 59% of its land zoned residential, 21% commercial, 8% industrial, and 12% parks / open space. Over 24 million visitors come to Gurnee annually, making it one of the top tourist and shopping attractions in Illinois.
What is now known as Six Flags Great America opened in May 1976 and remains a vital part of the Village’s tourism, entertainment, and economic base. Gurnee is also home to Gurnee Mills, a retail mecca with 200 stores, 17 anchors, and 1.9 million square feet of retail and restaurants. Key Lime Cove Indoor Waterpark Resort is a tropics-inspired “stay-cation” or vacation destination getaway. It is the official resort of Six Flags Great America and has helped earn Gurnee recognition as one of the Top 10 Vacation Destinations.
The Board of Trustees of the Village of Gurnee are committed to providing a high quality lifestyle of work, play, dining and cultural amenities for residents and visitors to Gurnee in the years to come.
