The City of Decatur (Population 73,500) is the largest city and the county seat of Macon County in the State of Illinois. Decatur was founded in 1829 and is located 40 minutes away from the State Capital of Springfield and less than 3 hours away from St. Louis, Indianapolis and Chicago. The City is seeking highly professional, energetic candidates interested in serving as its next Director of Public Works.
The Public Works department staffs approximately 120 full and part time employees, including professional engineers, managers, technicians, skilled and semiskilled workers, and laborers in a union environment. The department has an operating budget of $101 M and oversight of the 5-year Capital Improvement Program.
Under the direction of the City Manager, this position Directs and manages infrastructure development and maintenance for the City of Decatur, including the City's streets, sewers and water distribution system. Directs the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of structural elements within local public rights-of-way under City control. Also directs and monitors the planning, operation, and maintenance of water impoundment and production facilities, City buildings, the municipal parking system, and the City's vehicles.
The ideal candidate will have five or more years of responsible supervisor level experience in municipal engineering, infrastructure and water production management, including administrative experience. A Bachelor's degree is required in Civil Engineering or a related field, a Master's degree is preferred. A Professional Engineer's license in the State of Illinois is preferred upon hire, however the ability to obtain the license within two years is required. The candidate must be an effective communicator, a highly skilled manager and have extensive experience in managing municipal Capital Improvement Programs.
