Job Description

This position functions as a technical expert for the enterprise network infrastructure. This position is responsible for the connectivity of a complex network communication infrastructure that involves multiple hardware and software platforms, multiple operating systems, and advanced, emerging technologies such as Hewlett-Packard network switches, Cisco firewalls, and wireless configurations. This position works with the Information Technology Manager on the research, development, and support of core network infrastructure and tools to allow for all communications between IT assets connected to the city network. This position receives direction and supervision from the Information Technology Manager.


The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Monitor network data, alerts and security to make recommendations to better utilize resources for optimal performance and cost-effectiveness. (20%)
• Setup, configure and maintain server environment. Maintain installed enterprise level servers on an ongoing basis to remain at release levels consistent with resident application requirements in order to maintain reliability. (20%)
• Setup, configure and maintain switching environment. Maintain installed enterprise network hardware and system software on an ongoing basis to remain at recommended release level and to resolve problems in order to maintain system stability. (15%)
• Work with IT Manager on Disaster Recovery documentation creation, modification, and testing. (10%)
• Work collaboratively with other IT staff on software enhancements, upgrades and maintenance. (10%)
• Develop, establish, and document procedures for the proper use and support of enterprise network hardware and software. (5%)
• Actively participate in the development, documentation and implementation of IT management best practices to ensure the quality of services delivered to customers and partners. (5%)
• Maintain records of configuration changes made and their effect on total resource utilization. (5%)
• Maintain familiarity with activities and trends in the infrastructure hardware and software and other related technologies. (5%)
• Provide on-call support for the city’s infrastructure. (5%)


Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in IT Network Administration.
• Minimum five years of experience in networking and server management.
• Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Experience with WAN and LAN technologies such as VPN, switching, trunking, VLAN, NAT, ACL, and structured cabling.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to both technical peers and less technical customers in person and via written media such as email, reports, and project charters
• Understanding of project management concepts and tools.
• Resourceful in identifying and obtaining information sources needed to perform duties effectively.
• Ability to learn quickly; compile complex information, identify key points and communicate results accurately, timely and effectively.
• Knowledge of remote network administration which included installation, administration and troubleshooting experience.
• Knowledge TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP and other common network protocols.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Server operating system and inherent management tools.
• Knowledge of Hewlett-Packard enterprise switch configuration.
• Knowledge of Cisco router IOS.
• Ability to follow complex written and oral instructions.
